Jazzy Portrait: Alice Day

Jazz singer Debbie OrtaFor as long as Alice Day can remember, singing has been the driving force in her life. “I sing because I have to,” she says. “It’s like breathing.” She says that her life story is utterly simple. “I never thought about making a career in anything else. I always knew I would sing.”

Alice Day was introduced to jazz at an early age and her professional singing career started while she was still a teenager in her Florida hometown, Miami. She learned from the masters of the art, being most inspired by Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Mahalia Jackson.  “I am,” she says “on the same continuation with them, just as they were on the continuation of those singers who came before them such as Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. I’m a link in that chain.”

As a musician, Ms Day represents the best of the jazz vocal tradition. Rhythmically strong, emotionally intense and articulate, her gospel and jazz background serve as the basic ingredients for her art. Alice Day has firmly established her own musical identity, however, creating a style that is unique yet universal. She believes that jazz, the distinctly American art form, must be shared worldwide.  And she travels the world doing just that.

For the past 20 years or so, she estimates she is home in Florida approximately one month out of the year. The remainder of the year is spent touring. For four to six months, Ms Day has found a comfort zone in South East Asia, with extended stays in Bangkok, Thailand, at the Bamboo Bar in the Oriental Hotel, and the Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit. Each of these venues have been awarded the “High 5 Award” for the best jazz venue in Thailand on more than one occasion, during her stay there. Between trips to Bangkok and other South East Asian countries, Alice has carved a niche on the European circuit including tours in Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Portugal, France, and Austria.

Alice Day is a Renaissance woman: musician, recording artist, entrepreneur, lecturer, jazz promoter and former jazz club owner, disc jockey and humanitarian. She has received many awards and been recognized for her tireless community efforts, her generous contributions and her dedication to those in need.   In Florida, she is affectionately called “The First Lady of Jazz” and on one of her recent visits there, received the coveted Cultural Ambassadors’ Award and the Key to the City of Miami.

But above all, the lady sings, the lady swings!   Alice Day’s performances are full of delights and surprises.  Her candid presentation of unusual and lesser-known tunes transports her listeners deep into the lyrics meaning, finding nuance and beauty in places where few look. Her emotional and heartfelt interpretation of standards, coupled with her warm and dynamic personality, gives her tremendous success with audiences everywhere.

To hear her on record is a delight, to see her perform is an event. Small wonder the lady is constantly involved in worldwide touring activity.  Alice Day is a world class performer and the world is taking notice.
