Jazzy Portrait: Mr. Jazz Pizzazz Mel Dancy
Article by Bobby Ramirez

Jazz singer Debbie OrtaJazz has many types of executors that accentuate its musical language into variations that can take on many moods and formations. Then there’s Jazzy maestro Mel Dancy, who systematically infuses a new category within the confines of the Jazz idiom no less inspired by Pizzazz!

A consummate renaissance gentleman of classic Jazz, Mel Dancy is an accomplished musician on the piano and lyricist; including his uniquely precious gift of singing in various Jazz styles that includes the Blues, Swing and Bossa Nova.

After formal training as part of the Los Angeles Theater of the Arts, Dancy joined the Riveleers. Among his many noteworthy musical endeavors, Mel also arranged a tune for the McGuire Sisters called “I Love You for Sentimental Reasons.” According to Mel, that was “the first time a modulation ever appeared in R&B.”

Other collaborations included performances with The Platters for over four years as he tours with them to various places around the world; as well as writing with Dizzy Gillespie. He also toured as a solo artist in Japan and Russia as well as throughout Europe. Other performances have included stints at the famed Village Vanquard; including performances with Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, and the New York Jazz Quartet as the featured vocalist.

Later, he settled in Miami Florida instantly adding his unique Jazzy pizzazz to the South Florida Jazz scene where he performed in countless events and Jazz festivals in the area, as well as quickly establishing himself as one of the area’s premier Jazz singers performing at many Jazz clubs.

Mel's discography includes: "Just a Little Lovin'" (Mainstream Records); "You Touched Me" (Father Jazz Records); "Hit the Dollar" and "The Prime Element" (self-produced); "I love You for Sentimental Reasons", "A Thousand Stars in the Sky", and "Don't ever Leave Me", (The Riveleers); "The Singing Swinging Zeniths" (Atlantic Records)

Mel’s versatility as a performing artist includes theatrical production and television, film and commercial appearances. On the stage, he is incomparable as an authentic Showman matched by his immense talent. During his performances, one does not know what to expect. But, as he engages the audience, you can bet that it will be entertaining. No doubt, a gentle giant of Jazz: Mr. Jazz Pizzazz, Mel Dancy!
