Miami Latin Jazz
at Full Velocity
by Bobby Ramirez
Depending on who you speak with, there
is a line of distinctoin that equates to applicable Jazz theory
between the aesthetic values of a listener of Jazz music, and
the universal ethnicity and cultural ideals that a musician brings
to the language of Jazz.
On that note,
listeners will find it easy to digest the music of Miami Florida
based Negroni's Trio featuring pianist Jose Negroni, drummer
Nomar Negroni, and Jaime Rivera as part of this self-titled CD
"Negroniís Trio" which was nominated in 2005
for a Latin Grammy award for Best Latin Jazz Album.
Born in the Caribbean
island of Puerto Rico, Jose Negroni is a protegee of the great
Puerto Rican pianist Papo Lucca. From there he went on to build
a successful music career by establishing himself as one of the
most sought session players in the area, as well as lending his
producing and arranging talent as the Director for Sony Music
Publishing in the United States.
In 2002, he would
pursue his passion for Jazz by establishing Negroni's Trio which
includes his very talented son, Nomar Negroni on drums. Since
then, Negoni's trio has gained critical acclaim worldwide for
their music and powerful performances, as well as collaborations
with other Miami based award winning artistsóincluding:
trumpet sensation Arturo
Sandoval,
saxophonist Ed Calle, flautist Nestor
Torres,
and percussionists Sammy Figueroa.
With definitive
correlations attuned with Afro-Cuban Jazz fusion, Negroni's Trio
makes a firm musical statement with the first tune entitled "Los
Duendes"--a rapid-fire composition that is stylistically
reminiscence of Chic Corea with Latin Jazz flair.
Negroni's Trio
continues to entertain with a flurry of original Caribbean-tinged
compositions that feature remarkable interaction and solos--including
a couple of classic Jazz standards: George Gerswin's "Summertime",
and Wayne Shorter's "Footprints." Saxophone giant Ed
Calle adds his unique and special magic on the original tunes
entitled "Sentimental Mood" and "Rev It Up."
Showcasing his
talent of drums, Nomar Negroni performs a great solo highlighted
by Afro-Cuban Guaguanco Rumba rhythmic traditions as part of
the tune entitled "Red Light." His musical passion
shines throughout the recordings and contributes an indispensable
ingredient that gives Negroni's Trio its unique musical attributes.
And complimenting
the trio's musical journey is musician Jaime Rivera on electric
and acoustic bass. Rivera does an admirable job of establishing
the foundation and adding much energy to the overall sound of
the ensemble. His solos are also very fluid and creative within
the style offering hints of some of the greats like Nick Orta,
and John Patitucci.
No doubt that
listeners will find Negroni's Trio CD very entertaining. It is
not hard to find Negroni's Trio performing at local Jazz venues,
festivals or music events in Miami on any given night.
As Negroni's
Trio continues to inspire many Jazz fans in South Florida and
around the world, they are also poised to become an integral
part of a new generation of musicians that are helping to advance
Jazz well into the new millennium. |
